Anderton Boat Lift

Everyone deserves a place to escape

Anderton Boat Lift is one of the 'Seven Wonders of the Waterways' and together with its visitor centre, café, brand new Let's Play play area and nearby Northwich Community Woodlands make a visit unmissable!

We were very lucky to visit here during a very sunny bank holiday and we were overwhelmed by just how much there was to do. There is a small charge for parking but the visitor centre is completely free to visit and explore.

The Manchester Crochet Club meets fortnightly to learn crochet, meet other Manchester mums, and have a good chat. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, everyone is welcome to come along!
Fans of beloved loved children’s author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler are invited to enter a brilliant, 3-D technicolour world of their work at z-Arts in Manchester.
The play area is designed to look a bit like the lift itself. There's a bridge, control house and mooring area and it cleverly uses blue surfacing so children can pretend they're on the water. Here they also have a maze for you to venture in to.

The Let’s Play! area is also the starting point for a new nature and discovery trail. This leads you into the neighbouring Anderton Nature Park. The walk itself is described as easy and will take you approximately 2-3 hours to cover the 4km stretch. We didn't manage to do this but we will definitely be back to explore the area. We did however get to see it from the comfort of a glass sided boat.

The combined lift and river cruise is a ticketed experience and you have to buy your tickets in the visitor centre. They are for fixed times as the boat takes 56 people at a time. This takes around 75 minutes and will take you along the picturesque River Weaver to Northwich and back. Not only do you get to see today's beautiful wildlife and historic Northwich, but our guide will help you discover the industrial heritage of the area and why the lift was so important then and now.

The lower level of the visitor centre houses an exhibition which details the lift's history and explores the lives and experiences of those who lived around it and worked on it. There's lots of interactive, hands on elements for children here, including a dressing up area! They also have a cinematic centrepiece for you to enjoy.
