Bolton Library and Museum is a fantastic place to immerse yourself in amazing history, art and culture. The galleries here are highly accessible and incredibly family friendly. They have collections ranging from Egyptian mummies to local history and wildlife. All of which are engaging and exciting to see.
Our favourite part of the museum had to be the Egypt collection as there was so much to look at and explore. The exhibition is new and draws on the town’s longstanding association with Egyptology. It features a walk-through replica of the tomb of ancient pharaoh Thutmose III and contains over 2,000 artefacts. Information about the things here are explained really clearly and there were lots of interactive parts throughout the collection. We loved the big dressing up box and the Donkey Derby!
We also really enjoyed the nature galleries and spent quite a lot of time on this floor. We went during the week and we pretty much had this area to ourselves to explore. My little girl loved seeing all the different animals up close. The variety here was very impressive. She also loved the opportunity to dress up as a shark as there were bits of fancy dress here too. The gift shop in the museum is very impressive and there are lots of themed toys and books to take away.
In the basement of the museum they have a fresh water aquarium with an extensive fish collection. It contains a wide range of fresh water fish from all over the world and we were mesmerised by the selection. The spotted river ray were so fascinating and I have never seen any like this before. The museum try and keep the tanks as close to their natural habitat as possible.
