City Airport & Heliport: Watch Planes and Play for Free!

by Claire (follow)
If you're stuck for activity ideas and looking for a fun, budget friendly day out, then Barton's City Airport could be the answer.

There are several options for watching planes taking off and landing in Manchester. One is The Airport Pub at Manchester Airport which has a well equipped play area, quirky stylish restaurant (you can sit in a booth that's a big model plane engine sipping craft ales and cocktails), and an outside bar where you can watch the big airliners landing and taking off. It can get very busy though and you have to pay for parking.

There is also the Runway Visitor Park at the other end of the runway at Manchester Airport. This classes itself as an education centre, offering tours of hangars, cockpits and Concorde. It has a large space to walk around, an onsite cafe, and a picnic area. The Runway Visitor Park also sometimes plays host to specialised events, so make sure to keep up to date via their website.

But a great alternative option is the smaller City Airport at Barton, near Eccles. Here you can get up close and watch lots of helicopters and light aircrafts coming and going. You can even go to the top of the control tower - or as any Paw Patrol fans will think of it, the 'Lookout!'

It also has a lovely play area, which has recently been updated. Gone are the hay bales that people might remember from before, replaced by sturdy wooden equipment including swings, a slide, fireman's pole, rocking plane and.... a miniature lookout tower to climb up inside!

My three year old son and his friends spent a happy few hours here recently, while we adults actually managed to drink a cuppa sitting on one of the picnic benches - so everyone was happy!

The cherry on the cake? There's a cafe/ bar right next to it! Runway 26, serves up reasonably priced drinks, snacks, and light meals (including dishes for 'Junior Pilots').
