The East Lancashire Railway is a heritage railway line that runs for twelve and a half miles between Heywood and Rawtenstall. The main hub is located in the heart of Bury Town Centre. The East Lancashire Railway has been your gateway to great days out since 1846.
There are lots of super events here and we particularly enjoyed the 'Day Out with Thomas' event they had in May. These are run at regular intervals and the next weekend this will be held is in August. It offers a fab day out for all train enthusiasts and is a great way to explore the area. The event officially opens with the opening ceremony from the Fat Controller at Bury station. But this in no way dictates your route.
The event is dispersed throughout different venues and train stops and there is so much to do. You can make your way along the length of the line at a leisurely pace.
Your ticket includes:
- Rides behind Thomas
- Meeting the Fat Controller and friends
- Performances by Rusty and Dusty
- Unlimited Travel on steam and diesel trains
- Thomas themed activities at the Imagination station
- Re-enactments of classic Thomas stories
- Magic Shows
- Circus Workshops
- Face Painting
You can start your journey at any of the train stops if you purchase your ticket in advance. There are even themed activities at Bury Transport Museum for you to see! We hadn't been before so were excited to venture there and explore all the different vehicles. You could get your face painted here and there were lots of things to get involved in. There is no set structure to the day, but activities finish at 4pm.
We also really enjoyed the Christmas Santa Special train. We had so much fun on board that we will definitely be booking again this year. This event is one fixed return journey to Rawtenstall from Bury. We went with my little girl and she was mesmerised by the carol singers, the brass band, the magician, elves and Santa himself. She loved her present that was hand delivered and the adults on board most definitely enjoyed their Sherry and mince pies! Book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
