In February 2025, Elizabeth Gaskell's House will celebrate a decade since it opened its doors after being rescued from the brink of oblivion. To mark this remarkable transformation, a new exhibition has sprung up that brings together the tales and antics of those who rallied to save this beloved landmark. You'll meet characters like Janet Allan, the mastermind behind the restoration campaign, and Frank Galvin, who likes to think of himself as the Sherlock Holmes of historical homes. The exhibition is as much about their escapades and personal anecdotes as it is about the bricks and mortar.
Prepare to be whisked away on a journey through time, from the house's sad, neglected beginnings to the stunning gem it is today, all while contemplating the ironic truth that cake and camaraderie often play a vital role in saving the day. As a cherry on top, the exhibition features a splendid anniversary quilt crafted by textile artist Dr Sarah-Joy Ford, inspired by the heartfelt stories shared throughout the restoration saga. So why not pop along and soak up some history peppered with a bit of charm and a dash of community spirit?
