The wheels on the bus go round and round…!

If you have a little one who likes vehicles, why not head over to Manchester's [LINkhttp://www.gmts.co.uk/ Museum of Transport] for some wheely good fun!

The Transport Museum

This little-known museum is a veritable grotto of restored buses from the turn of the previous century right through to this millennium. Housed in two huge exhibition rooms, there are all sorts of coloured buses, many of which are double-deckers, and even a horse-drawn one!

Though some of them are locked, there are still a good number that you can climb into and explore. There’s also an old fire engine (with a big old bell you can ring) and a 1990s Metrolink tram. The tram was our favourite, mainly because you can actually press the emergency button (which makes a buzzing noise), cue lots of fun with one person climbing into the driver’s seat, while the other pressed the emergency button to ‘stop’ the tram!

Horse drawn transport

We headed there recently on a Saturday afternoon and had the place almost exclusively to ourselves; other than another pair of young brothers and their grandparents.

The boys all had a great time chasing each other round the buses and climbing into them to find various hiding spots! With it being so quiet we were also lucky enough to have a museum volunteer unlock the driver’s cab on one of the buses for us, so we could press various buttons and have a go at being the bus driver!

As well as the museums displays, there is also a gift shop onsite where you can buy miniature buses, cars and other trinkets, as well as a little tea room serving hot and cold light meals and refreshments. The museum is also home to various events throughout the year, such as the 1960s weekend when you can actually take a ride on one of the buses.

The Transport Museum

Located at Cheetham Hill, just round the corner from the Fort Retail Park, the Museum is easy to get to by car or by the 95 bus from the city centre. You can check out directions and information on other bus routes, as well as rail and Metrolink services #tea ">here.

When we went, there were plenty of on-street parking spaces available right outside, though on event days these can apparently get taken up so you’ll need to park a little further away.
