A play area with a difference
[Link http://book.manchesterairport.co.uk/manweb.nsf/content/runwayvisitorpark Runway Visitor Park] at Manchester Airport is a great day out for all ages. With several viewing platforms within the park you can watch planes take-off and land every couple of minutes. There is a play area facing the runway and planes for children to explore, all of which are free to enter.
It is truly exhilarating watching from the raised viewing mounds as they give a clear 180-degree view over the airfield. There are approximately 600 aircraft movements each day so there's always something to see. We loved watching the huge Emirates planes and spent a considerable amount of time imagining which far off destination they were travelling to!
There are a series of planes dotted around the park and these include; the DC-10, Trident and Avro RJX. At weekends at least one of these will be open for visitors free of charge. We loved hopping on board the Avro RJX. They also have tours available for visitors and these range from classic tours to technical tours. For £15 per person you can spend an hour on the Concorde Classic tour. Here you will board the Concorde, see the luxurious leather seats and learn about some of the aircraft's famous passengers. You will also get to sit in the pilots seat and discover some of the unique features that made Concorde so special. These tours require booking in advance.
If the weather takes a turn for the worse there is a fabulous café and restaurant on site, with a birds eye view of the planes too. The Concorde Coffee House is perfect for light bites and grabbing things on the go. There are also picnic tables outside. The coffee house is open daily from 8:00am. Make your trip extra memorable with a range of aviation-related products suitable for children through to the serious enthusiast at the park's gift shop.
The park is free for visitors who get there by foot, bicycle or on public transport. For those who like cycling Manchester Airport is situated just off the family-friendly Airport Orbital Cycleway. Car and motorbike parking charges are as follows: £5 up to 2 hours, £10 from 2 hours up to 4 hours, and £12 for all stays over 4 hours.
