Smithills Open Farm is a large working dairy farm which is open to the public seven days a week, 10am til 5pm, all year round. They have all the traditional farm animals from cows, sheep, goats and pigs to a variety of zoo animals such as coatis, owls, snakes and lizards. This farm is a must-see for any animal enthusiasts.
They host a range of daily activities and these are offered all year round. Our favourite activity is Pets Corner, which has recently moved to a larger area of the farm due to its popularity. Here you get to meet, feed, hold, stroke and interact with all of their cute and cuddly baby animals. The llamas are the softest animals you will ever meet. We have been to Pets Corner on every visit and each time it offers a new experience. Other activities on the farm include; donkey rides, tractor and trailer rides, milking the cows and calf feeding.
The farm itself is family run and caters for birthday parties and educational visits. They also run seasonal events, these include; Easter egg hunts, Halloween and Christmas events. During the October half term, we visited the farm and all the staff were dressed up in their favourite costumes. They had regular spooky walks and craft activities with a Halloween twist.
And if the animals and the daily activities weren't enough, they even have a large range of outdoor play equipment. They also have a small area near the café with toy tractors and an indoor area with bouncy castles and inflatable assault courses. Smithills makes for an action-packed day out and is suitable for children of all ages.
Feedback from Facebook:
"A fantastic teamwork on this family run working farm. They obviously love chatting to visitors and showing off all the gorgeous animals they care for, especially the babies :) I highly recommend a visit. No only is it a wonderful day out but the food in the cafe is delicious"
"We visited today with my little boy who's 20months old. There was so much to do and see. All the staff were amazing, especially the farmer who let my little boy sit in his tractor (he's tractor mad) We got to feed the lambs and calves and get hands-on with lots of other animals including baby chicks and goats! We will definitely be returning."
