Tea, Cakes and Tiaras

by Gaynor (follow)
Afternoon tea may not seem like the ideal activity for a food flinging toddler, but at Tea, Cakes and Tiaras, making a mess is all part of the fun.

Located on Oldham Road in Ashton-Under-Lyne, the café is positively aimed at young children, but with the menu and interior of an elegant tea room.

We booked ahead by phone, as they sometimes host parties, but it was nicely quiet on a Saturday lunchtime.

We were a little wary of using real plates and cups after months of plastic tableware, but the owner immediately came over to reassure us that our two year old was fine and if there were any breakages it wasn't a problem.

The kindness continued as she offered our daughter a real tea pot to pour her banana milkshake into her cup and back again…and back again. We were brought extra napkins and told again not to fret about the mess but to let our daughter have fun playing.

For food, we were given the choice of sharing one afternoon tea between the three of us, however we opted for one child portion (£4.95 each) and two adult portions (£9.95 each). We definitely could have shared!

The mini cakes were a good size for a child and the tasty sandwiches were eaten as well. Customers can choose from different breads and fillings, and it really felt like nothing was too much trouble.

The venue is small, with not much for children aside from the food but everyone was happy enough.

On our trip, there were families with a fairly young baby, a few toddlers and two slightly older girls enjoying wonderfully decorated ‘unicorn milkshakes’. We’ll definitely be ordering one of them on our return visit!
