Everyone loves a free day out and a trip to a Museum is quite often the perfect wet weather contingency plan. As well as being educational they often have a wide range of family friendly activities planned and lots of events scheduled at weekends and school holidays. Here at Manchester Mums we have compiled our favourite ones and there is definitely something for everyone on this list!

The Science and Industry Museum is devoted to inspiring visitors through ideas that change the world, from the Industrial Revolution to today and beyond. The museum itself is located on the site of the oldest surviving passenger railway station and seeks to host exhibitions and events that bring science and technology alive. The experiment gallery on the top floor is a must see space for families and has lots of hands on activities that children will love. There is also a quieter sensory space for younger children in the textiles gallery.

Between 2018 and 2021 the museum will undergo a period of transformation and there will be extensive redevelopment work. During this time the museum will go back to its roots as a natural history museum. The Natural History galleries, the Vivarium (Live Animals gallery) and Fossils galleries will remain open throughout the redevelopment. You can also visit Nature Discovery, a dedicated gallery for under 5’s, where children can explore the natural world. You can also look out for the toddler handling table in Nature Discovery gallery facilitated by their on-hand volunteers.

Bolton Library and Museum is a fantastic place to immerse yourself in amazing history, art and culture. The galleries here are highly accessible and incredibly family friendly. They have collections ranging from Egyptian mummies to local history and wildlife. All of which are engaging and exciting to see. Don't forget to visit the ground floor here to see the freshwater aquarium!

The Whitworth is a gallery that is historic and contemporary, academic and playful. It was founded in 1889 as the first English gallery in a park and it has recently been transformed by a £15 million development. They have a spectacular events programme and are incredibly family friendly. At the Whitworth, they take the inside out via a programme of free events that explore art and nature. These activities include; Welly Walks, messy play sessions (inspired by the natural world) and self-guided trails around the park.

With 6 floors of football history and modern day memorabilia, you're sure to find a number of impressive facts and displays. There's the 'Football Walk of Fame', details of how football has been represented by the fans, the media, and of course, the players, and even the chance to lift some of the world's most famous (virtual) trophies! Check out informative football videos, the world's most recognised kits, and even try your hand at the penalty shoot out! There's so much to see and do and it's perfect for supporters of any age.

The museum was one of the cities earliest police stations and has been lovingly restored to reflect the reality of policing in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.The archives enable you to experience what it was really like for officers in a busy Victorian police station. You will also get to see how policing has changed over the years and see how the police meet the needs of today's society. They hold special open events during the school holidays and although at these times it is incredibly busy it is well worth it.
