Trentham Monkey Forest

by Lydia (follow)
Walk among the monkeys

Trentham Monkey Forest is a unique experience within the UK. It is the only place you can walk amongst 140 Barbary macaques! It is set in beautiful Staffordshire woodland and it offers a fantastic day out. There are 140 free-roaming monkeys here for you to admire in all their glory.

The forest itself consists of a 3/4 mile visitor pathway for you to walk round. The walkway is accessible by pram but a little uneven and steep in places. Along the way you can see the monkey antics unfold in front of you. You can enter the enclosure as many times as you want during the day and spend as much time as you like watching the monkeys. There are some really great vantage points throughout the forest and you may even get really close to them as they cross the path in front of you. There are also information boards along the way for you to test your knowledge about monkeys.

Knowledgeable guides are situated throughout the forest to help answer any questions you may have during your trip and to ensure the park rules are followed. Hourly feeding talks take place at quarter past each hour and are a must watch. Here you will learn lots about the animals and get to grips with the group dynamics. They encourage you to take lots of photographs throughout your time here.

Once you have finished in the main enclosure there is lots for you to visit and do. They have an information centre, a video room, two play areas, an on-site café and a jungle shop. They even have an extensive area for picnics, so it makes it an ideal location to have a spot of lunch.

They also have a wide range of events here and they promise to be lots of fun. Upcoming events include; Africa Day, Summer Reading Workshop and the Wildlife Photography Workshop. At the Africa Day they will be joined by the amazing 'Save the Children' charity who will be telling people all about the brilliant work they do across Africa. You can also get your face painted (for a small charge) like your favourite African animal. There will also be a choir and Kotu drummers.

The experience at Monkey Forest will take you a couple of hours so is a great activity for a morning or afternoon. If you want to spend a full day in the area you can get discounted tickets for Trentham Gardens if you show your receipt at the ticket office.
